In life, we experience a delicate cycle of ebbs and flows, pain and triumph, hustle and ease. This rhythm moves around and through us at all times. When we take a step back, we can recognize this cycle in natural phenomena like the phases of the moon and the earth’s seasons. Just as the seasons move from emptiness to abundance, the moon also goes through periods of bright light (Full Moon) and darkness (New Moon). It’s a dance between ease and challenge, as well as clarity and uncertainty. It is the journey between uncertainty and clarity which teaches us that all forms of opposition are opportunities to refine our vision and go after our deepest desires.

The eight phases of the moon provide the perfect roadmap to change. When we align with them, we can work with the natural forces to clarify, continually refine, and go after a vision until it arrives.

Here’s a guide on how to work with the phases of the moon to create your desires.

New Moon

Setting intentions at this phase of the moon kicks off the manifestation journey. This is when the sun and moon are in alignment, representing a moment of fertility and a time to plant the seeds of intention. Start fresh and think about what you really want.

MOON TIP: Create space to be still and hear your thoughts. Think about what you most want to call into your life and set a firm intention for such.

Waxing Crescent Moon

As the moon begins to wax, it’s time to breathe new life into any area of stagnation or any place in your life where you would like to impact positive change. The moon and the sun are forming a supportive sextile in the sky, and this lunar position offers the opportunity to solidify your intention with positive affirmations.

MOON TIP: Use candle magic to amplify manifestation potential. Anoint a candle with a resonant oil and carve a symbol into the candle that represents the desire you wish to create.

First Quarter Moon

This portion of the lunar cycle allows you to see the issues that have arisen since the New Moon and enables you to adjust your plans accordingly. As the sun and moon square, face adversity with a resolute but flexible mind. Find workarounds.

MOON TIP: Notice what’s not working, and make a change. Work productively with challenges. Root your intention. A problem or setback is always an opportunity to see what you could be doing differently to bring your desire to fruition, so pivot, but don’t abandon your abandon your goals. Use sage and incense to clear obstacles.

Waxing Gibbous Moon

This is a high energy moment, right before the Full Moon. With the lunar momentum waxing to peak and the sun and moon forming a trine, things should start to feel like they are aligning. Therefore, this is the time to ramp up energy in your life. Take action on behalf of your intended desire. Go after it with your whole heart.

MOON TIP: Tune into a sense of ease and excitement. Stay positive and do things to raise your vibe. As your intentions ripen, stay focused on your goals. Use crystals to amplify intentions.

Full Moon

Full Moons are nourishing. Think about it: the moon, symbolic of the feminine, receives the light of the sun, shining it back to us with illumination. This astrological opposition is a time of peak creative energy and incredibly powerful intuitive breakthroughs. Full Moons accentuate everything that you’ve been working on during the waxing phase. Take time to reflect on your journey.

MOON TIP: Get outside at night and let the light of the moon shine upon you. Recognize the progress you’ve made in manifesting your desire. It may not be perfect, or anything like you imagined, and that’s ok!

Waning Gibbous Moon

After the Full Moon (while the light of the moon wanes and the sun and moon trine), it’s essential to consider what you need to release. During this phase, reflect on what is blocking you from receiving your desired outcome. Continue to release limiting beliefs and old patterns of behavior that are preventing you from what you want.

MOON TIP: Use Sage and crystals to clear old energy.

Last Quarter Moon

When the moon begins to wane and the light disseminates, there is a call to go within and do the internal work of seeking answers and heart-driven guidance. Grant yourself full permission to become more committed to yourself during this phase. Listen to your emotions right now, as they are ripe with messages for you. Listen intently for direction and guidance.

MOON TIP: Use a ceremonial fire to shed what you no longer need.  To do this in your own kitchen, line a pot with tinfoil, add in one cup of Epsom salt, and a splash of rubbing alcohol. Then drop a match in (remember to practice fire safety!) As the fire burns, write down what you need to release and then drop the paper in the fire. Surrender the obstacle.

Waning Crescent Moon

This final cycle helps you reconnect with faith and your vision. It occurs right before the next new moon. That said, it provides an opportunity to reflect back on the whole lunar cycle that has come to pass. What have you learned? What has happened? What hasn’t?

MOON TIP: Re-read your New Moon intention and evaluate how you’ve changed since you wrote it. Then consider how you want to get reorganized for this next new moon. This reorganization prepares you for the next moon cycle and infuses your intention with more energy and power.
