Eclipses are a special type of lunation that activate the karmic pathways in our charts. These striking, cosmic displays happen at the beginning and end of lunar cycles, but they aren’t all the same: solar eclipses correspond with new moons, while lunar eclipses are triggered by full moons. What makes these lunations different, however, is that eclipses are specifically triggered by the moon’s orbit.

The moon’s orbit is not completely stable; it tilts at different points during the transit. When it reaches the lowest or highest ascension of its tilt, its it touches the “lunar nodes.” These lunar nodes are the upper boundaries of the moon’s movement, where it can’t go any higher or any lower than these points. Solar and lunar eclipses occur when the moon reaches its lunar points (approximately four to seven times per year).

This phenomena is also reflected in our natal charts. The “South Node” and “North Node” (the associated symbols resemble horseshoes), depict these lunar nodes within our chart. The South Node and North Node exist in the exact opposite signs and degree, reflecting the clearly delineated “top” and “bottom” areas of our charts. At the moment of our birth, the moon’s lowest decision and highest ascension are captured by these icons. The South Node reveals past life, early childhood experiences, and how we are trying to grow. Often, our South Node is our “comfort zone,” and we may find it difficult to find the self-awareness here that fosters positive growth. Our North Nodes, on the other hand, symbolize our destiny. The North Node exposes are full cosmic potential, and can be unlocked using your unique skills and resources. Though the North Node sometimes feels inaccessible (after all, accessing the North Node is a lifelong journey), eclipses help navigate us through the nodes to make sure we’re on the right path.

Eclipses are here to steer us on the right karmic path, but these dramatic lunar motions have an aggressive way of showing that they care. Eclipses open new doors by slamming others shut — a painful reminder that on our quests to reach our highest potential, we must leave stale or toxic dynamics behind. Of course, eclipses have more astral vision than we do here on earth: Sometimes the harsh shifts that occur during eclipses can be scary or uncomfortable. Just remember, cosmic warrior, eclipses always have your best interest in mind. Any endings connected to eclipses were inevitable — eclipses simply expedite the truth.

Solar eclipses occur between new moons: when the sun and moon are in the same constellation. At its lunar node, the moon glides between the sun and moon, sometimes creating a striking visual display (á la  the “Great American Eclipse” on August 21, 2017). Astrologically speaking, solar eclipse draws a line in the sand. These notion signifies the beginning of a new cycle, which doesn’t (albeit sometimes harshly) want to bring any toxic or superfluous dynamics from the past into a new start. During a solar eclipse, we must listen to our intuition, trust our gut, and march ahead — even if we can’t see yet what’s on the other side.

Lunar eclipses, on the other hand, occur during full moons, when the sun and moon are in complete opposition. Full moons provide maximum nocturnal illumination: All the information we need is visible. Lunar eclipses are periods of discovery. You may be exposed to surprising news, or experience a personal “Eureka” moment that offers an unexpected perspective on a difficult situation. During a lunar eclipse, your paths — both the difficult and easy — are exposed. This is an opportunity to guide yourself through the knowledge you’ve received. If something is no longer serving you, it’s the moment of release.

Want to find out where the eclipses hits your natal chart? Our current eclipse series began in August 2016, illuminating the Leo and Aquarius axis (this eclipse series concludes January 2019, table of dates below). In your birth chart, identify the locations of Leo and Aquarius. Are your North and South Node in either Leo or Aquarius? This is called a lunar return…and that’s a big deal! Lots of transformation has been going on in your life during this time! Perhaps virtually everything in your life has changed! Onwards and upwards, we’re a more than halfway to the end!

If you have other planets in Leo or Aquarius, they have been activated during this eclipse series, as well. Your eclipse themes likely coincided with the planet’s energy (for instance, if your Mercury is in Aquarius, themes may have been communication based; if your Venus is in Leo, themes may have been romantically-oriented).

No planets in Leo or Aquarius? Don’t fret! Every person’s chart actually contains all the constellations (after all, it is a full astrological wheel). Locate the areas of Leo and Aquarius on your outer wheel natal wheel to identify which houses Leo and Aquarius govern. From there, you’ll be able to identify which areas of life the eclipses have been impact.

Remember, cosmic warriors, everything in life — including eclipses — is cyclical. Use this magical lunation to help offer guidance on your extraordinary cosmic journey! Enjoy the ride!
